STD Risk Statistics
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and HIV are trending in the USA. Although HIV can also be spread by IV drug use, the number of new cases each year is still troubling news.
Married couples are at the lowest risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases and often wealthier than unmarried people on average. According to 2010 Census Bureau statistics, the net worth of a married couple near the age of retirement was over a quarter million dollars. This dwarfs the $70,000 and $40,000 that a single man or woman, respectively, obtained.
In third world countries, the poorer regions are most affected by HIV and, likewise, have a higher incidence among homosexual men. This is pursuant to the belief that HIV has a higher affinity for transmission during the anal sex that is chiefly engaged in by homosexual men because the tearing allows for blood transmission.
HIV is Trending Higher in Certain Demographics
In 2014, 70% of the 37,600 new cases of HIV reported were among gay and bisexual men in the United States, according to the CDC. The majority of these cases affect young black homosexual men. Only one-fifth of the new cases affected women.
Identifying women by demographics who are at the highest risk is even easier when we consider that the percentage of women in prison with HIV is 30 times higher than the general population. According to a recent report from the US General Accounting Office, US prisons hold a population ratio of about 1 woman for every 10 men.
The incidence of women with HIV is even greater in the Northeastern states. In New York, the incidence among black and Latino women is the highest (19%). The numbers demonstrate that 13% of the female prison populations in state and federal prisons have HIV, according to recent reports by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
These numbers make a lot of sense when we examine the heroin epidemic that is trending in New York, Vermont, New Jersey, and throughout the Northeastern States. Like anal sex, heroin use tends to lead to blood transmission when addicts share dirty needles. People addicted to heroin are so apathetic that they use any needles at all.
The Most Common STD in the World
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is currently the most common STD transmitted in the USA and around the world. The CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) reports more than 600 million diagnosed cases worldwide and 20 million in the United States.
The reason why HPV doesn’t make the stomach drop like the word HIV is because there are more than 40 different strains of this virus. In 90 percent of the cases, the carriers are asymptomatic and do not know they have it because the body fights the virus and wipes it out in a few years.
The more aggressive HPV viruses can cause genital warts and cervical cancer. A Canadian study concluded that 44 percent of HPV viruses have the potential to mutate into cancer if not defeated by the immune system. HPV is a sad story because it is so definitively linked to cervical cancer which is the second leading killer among cancers.
Approximately 12,000 American women are diagnosed every year with cervical cancer. It takes an annual toll of 232,000 deaths around the world. Recently, steps have been taken to vaccinate against it in young girls in the 11-12 year age range and boys around 9.
Nevertheless, this vaccine is more effective when injected at these ideal age ranges and is not foolproof. The two leading vaccines on the market only protect against two types of HPV known to cause cancer and genital warts. Regular screenings for cervical cancer are required, in any case.
STD’s Trending in Chicago
According to the Chicago Department of Health, the number of newly reported chlamydia cases in Chicago during 2014 rose to double the national average. The number of new gonorrhea infections was even higher at three times the national average.
This alarming trend is being blamed on something called “sexual sorting” where diverse numbers of people form cliques with others who share their fetishes. When one of the members of the circle gets an infection, it quickly spreads to the others.
It is estimated that 65 Million Americans have an STD. Surprisingly, 20 percent of the girls who are still in high school have STD infections. One-fifth of the population has herpes. Every week, 15 American porn stars and actresses who engage in paid sex test positive for an STD.
When we look at the broad spectrum of STD’s, four southern states are the most affected: Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and South Carolina. It is believed that 85 percent of Americans are living with an incurable form of herpes that usually produces no symptoms.
Symptoms of Three Major STD’s Trending in the USA
When HIV hits people, they can develop the following symptoms:
- severe rash
- night sweats
- flu-like symptoms
- low-grade fever
- general fatigue
- swollen lymph nodes
- oral thrush
- painful swallowing
- abdominal pain
- among others …
These symptoms can appear one to two weeks after exposure in what is known as the seroconversion phase. This is when the body starts to develop antibodies to attack the HIV virus. It is estimated that seroconversion sickness affects anywhere from 50 to 90 percent of newly infected individuals.
However, because the symptoms can be from an ordinary flu or cold virus, it may be difficult to tell them apart from HIV. A specific type of reddish macular rash that doesn’t itch is the most distinctive symptom. The body recovers in a few weeks and can remain asymptomatic for years while still being able to easily transmit the infection.
The period before seroconversion is known as the window period and can last anywhere from one to four weeks after infection. The period that follows seroconversion is known as the incubation period. This can last as long as 10 years in young adults who are otherwise healthy.
In the latter stages of HIV infection, the T cells which produce antibodies for attacking pathogens are destroyed. The HIV virus is a retrovirus that hijacks the T cells it infects, using the cell’s own internal DNA replication mitosis machinery to manufacture replicas of the virus.
After the T cells are destroyed, it is very easy for opportunistic infections to take hold. Specific types of pneumonia (e.g., Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia) are commonly found in the human body but kept under control by the immune system. Once the immune system is weakened, it is very easy for these latent pathogens to overcome you.
It is only the latter stages of HIV that are known by the name AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The number of medications and treatments for HIV infected persons has extended lifespans. These drugs are most effective when the virus is detected early and can reduce the viral loads to undetectable levels.
Although it can have no symptoms, chlamydia often causes the following issues:
- painful sex
- penile discharge (pus or watery)
- testicular swelling/pain
- abdominal pain
- bleeding between menstruations
- burning during urination
- vaginal discharge (pungent or yellowish)
It may also cause eye problems that result in pain, redness, itching, and discharge. In some cases, you can have chlamydia in your throat.
Over 70 percent of women who contract chlamydia have no symptoms. If left undetected and untreated, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can lead to infertility and those scary ectopic pregnancies. In fact, PID is the leading cause of these gynocentric problems.
In most cases, if detected early enough, chlamydia can be cured using antibiotics with no permanent side-effects. However, the newer strains of chlamydia can be more aggressive and resistant to treatment. If the chlamydia cannot be cured by the latest line of powerful antibiotics or is left untreated, it can progress into infertility for both men and women.
Chlamydia is the leading cause of reactive arthritis (SARA). This type of ailment has no cure but usually clears up within a few months. It is a type of inflammation that affects the eyes, joints, and urethra.
The following symptoms of gonorrhea are very similar to chlamydia but more deadly if left untreated:
- anal itching
- testicular swelling/pain
- painful bowel movements
- bleeding between menstruations/heavy periods
- painful burning during urination
- vaginal or penile discharge (thick cloudy)
- abdominal pain
- painful sex
Antibiotics such as Cipro have been used to treat gonorrhea with some very nasty side-effects. Drug-resistant strains are developing, in part, because people fail to complete antibiotic regimens properly and spread the mutated forms.
Gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disorder (PID) in women and cause infertility in men. If left untreated, it can also spread into the blood and cause the potentially deadly condition called disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI)
